Coaching impacts others in a satisfying way which leaves a Legacy and connects us to our communities! Have you ever thought about using life coach training to make a difference in your community?
I knew a woman named Kay from a small community we shared. We had seen each other several times, but never really interacted. One day, I was arriving at our local community center as she was leaving. As she was readying her purse near the door she explained to several people nearby the struggles she was having with a project which was meant to help impact a 100 at-risk kids at risk of being homeless.
I have a heart for kids
I have a heart for kids, especially those who aren’t being given a foundation for happiness in life. So I chimed in to ask questions. That’s when I found out she was a member of a local Kiwanis chapter committed to creating an event meant to provide education and employment opportunities to kids that age-out of the foster care (orphan) system.
In less than 5 minutes I learned somethings that made it impossible for me to avoid helping. To give you some context for the dramatic nature of one of these kids lives. . . They often get transferred around between foster homes (a family) or group homes (orphanage)… which is a nice name for the modern-day
At 18 they are homeless. Interesting in making a difference yet? How about that life coach training I mentioned earlier?
This all reminds me of a documentary I once saw on the Greenland Barnacle goose. The nest of this bird is always perched on a high cliff roughly 400 feet in the air. Before the gosling’s wings have fully formed, the mother stops taking care of it, so the hungry adolescent bird must leap out of the nest, falling down the cliff. Many of these birds die the day they jump. The statistics for these foster kids (orphans) are worse than that of the goslings; much worse.
The Statistics for these foster kids are worse
Most of us cannot begin to imagine being cut off from all love and support on our 18th birthdays. Much less growing up without love and support and then being kicked out of the only shelter and access to reliable food we know on our 18th birthday. (Which is state-mandated, by the way.) I also learned that many of these kids don’t know the birthday song because they’ve literally never been sung to on their birthdays. Imagine that kind of life. Ready for that life coach training yet?
Now that we have some context for the kids Kay was trying to help. You can understand her frustration at the fact that the event she was putting together wasn’t actually coming together.
I felt compelled to help her make a difference. Before she walked out the door that day, I gave her my card and told her what I do for a living and
Luckily, Kay called me and the result was that the Kiwanis of AZ made the resources event a statewide initiative. In fact, they are now working to connect with group homes (orphanages) around the state, to celebrate kids’ birthdays…so they know before an orphanage ages-out of the system! Allowing them to interrupt the cycle and reduce the statistics of homelessness, incarceration, and death among these innocent youth.
I’m a fire starter. It is one of my greatest skills or strengths came from the life coach training I know offer others. I can see possibility where others don’t. I see openings for action that others miss, as well as, opportunities for progress. And I take action. That’s why, when Kay spoke to me about the challenges and hurdles she was facing, whether it was internally with the team, or externally with the need for additional resources I was able to help.
- I ask performance and possibility questions.
- Worked with her to ID the critical point of change.
- Shared my insights.
- Exchanged strategic approach opportunities.
She left with critical actions
In each conversation, she left with (a) critical action(s) and sometimes a check-back date to connect with me again. Although I worked with Kay completely for free, I worked with her exactly as I do with all my clients.
- I listen for what matters most to them in their lives, leadership or legacy commitments and
- I work with them until they win what they are playing for.
In this case, Kay’s intention to make this one event happen, resulted in
She made a difference… and ignited inspiration across the state…
Life coach training gives people the ability and know-how to become the fire-starters of the initiatives that matter most to them.
